Highway 12 road construction begins April 20 between Wayzata and Minnetonk

The pavement preservation project will result in delays, lane reductions and ramp closures through November; construction adds to nearby projects along I-394

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin a major pavement preservation project on Highway 12 from Wayzata to Minnetonka on April 20. The work is scheduled to be completed in November and will result in delays, lane reductions, ramp closures and two weekend closures.

The Highway 12 project area is between Shoreline Drive (County Road 15) in Wayzata and Interstate 494 in Minnetonka. The work will include full road reconstruction and pavement repairs, plus make important drainage improvements, which will support the overall maintenance and lifespan of the roadway. Prior to the road work starting, crews are removing select trees and vegetation in the city and state right of way.

“Portions of Highway 12 were built in the 1970s, and it’s important to address and improve the road’s surface and overall infrastructure,” says Tim Clyne, MnDOT Construction Engineer. “This work will give Highway 12 another 20-plus years of life and will ultimately benefit motorists, businesses and residents.”

Lane reductions and the moveable barrier system
From April 20 through November, Highway 12 will be reduced to two lanes in both directions between Shoreline Drive in Wayzata and I-494 in Minnetonka.

Unique to this project, starting in early May, a moveable barrier system will be used between Shoreline Drive and Central Avenue (County Road 101) in Wayzata. This system will physically move the lane barrier to support traffic flow to provide more lanes for peak traffic direction during weekdays:

  • Morning rush hours: Westbound Highway 12 will be reduced to one lane, eastbound Highway12 will be reduced to two lanes.
  • Afternoon rush hours: Eastbound Highway 12 will be reduced to one lane, westbound Highway 12 will be reduced to two lanes.
  • Weekdays during non-rush hours: Motorists can generally expect two lanes of traffic for eastbound Highway 12 from approximately 8 p.m. through 11:30 a.m. and two lanes for westbound Highway 12 from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.
  • Weekends: Eastbound Highway12 will be reduced to one lane, westbound Highway 12 will be reduced to two lanes; this configuration may change pending traffic volume and needs.
    Long-term ramp closures
    Early May through mid-summer

  • The westbound Highway 12 ramp to Shoreline Drive will be closed.

  • The westbound Highway 12 ramps to and from Central Avenue will be closed.
    Mid-summer through November

  • The northbound Shoreline Drive ramp to eastbound Highway 12 will be closed.

  • The eastbound Highway 12 ramps to and from Central Avenue will be closed.
    Short-term ramp closures
    Late April through November

  • There will be multiple short-term ramp closures across the Highway 12 project area; these closures will each last a few weeks. Closures and detours will be listed on the project webpage as information becomes available.
    Weekend closures

  • The construction will result in two full weekend closures of Highway 12 between Central Avenue and I-494. These closures will be scheduled before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.

I-394 between Highway 100 and downtown Minneapolis — through November

  • Through mid-summer, the main westbound I-394 lanes are closed, with westbound traffic using the E-ZPass lanes. From mid-summer through November, the eastbound I-394 lanes will be closed, with eastbound traffic using the E-ZPass lanes. Crews are repairing and restoring more than 30 bridges across I-94 and I-394. mndot.gov/metro/projects/i94-i394minneapolis/.
I-394 at Hopkins Crossroads — April 27 through early July

  • Construction at I-394 and Hopkins Crossroad in Minnetonka will close the westbound I-394 ramps to/from Hopkins Crossroad. Check 511 for up-to-date information on this closure. This project will replace the traffic signal at the westbound exit/entrance ramps of I-394 and Hopkins Crossroad and add a new 10-foot-wide asphalt trail along the west side of Hopkins Crossroad between Wayzata Blvd. and the north side of the Hopkins Crossroad bridge over I-394. I-394 in St. Louis Park — through September

  • This project will add auxiliary lanes on I-394 — this type of lane gives motorists additional space and time to safely accelerate/decelerate to enter and exit I-394. As a result of this work, these closures will occur through September: the ramp from Louisiana Ave. to eastbound I-394; the ramp from eastbound I-394 to Xenia Ave./Park Pl.; and westbound Wayzata Blvd. between Louisiana Ave. and Zarthan Ave. https://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/i394stlouispark/index.html ###
