Summary

The Kansas Board of Pharmacy has adopted the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) for pharmacist licensure, effective April 1, 2026. New graduates and pharmacists transferring licenses will be required to pass the Uniform MPJE, with the previous Kansas MPJE being discontinued at the end of 2026.

What changed

Effective April 1, 2026, the Kansas Board of Pharmacy will require all new pharmacist licensure applicants, including graduates from ACPE-accredited programs and foreign-educated pharmacists, to pass the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). This change also applies to licensed pharmacists seeking to transfer their license to Kansas. The previous Kansas-specific MPJE will be discontinued at the end of 2026.

Pharmacist interns who have completed their didactic curriculum may also be eligible for early administration of the Uniform MPJE. The Board has also approved pharmacist interns for early administration of the Uniform MPJE. This update necessitates a review of current licensure application processes and examination preparation materials for individuals seeking licensure in Kansas after the effective date.

What to do next

  1. Update licensure application processes to include the Uniform MPJE for new graduates and license transfers.
  2. Ensure pharmacist interns are aware of eligibility for early administration of the Uniform MPJE.
  3. Prepare for the discontinuation of the Kansas MPJE at the end of 2026.

 Prescription Fills/Refills and Time Limits

The inspectors have been receiving questions lately regarding prescription fills/refills and time limits.

  • Does Kansas have a minimum amount of time that must elapse before a prescription can be
refilled? For example, if a prescription should last 30 days, does the pharmacy have to wait to refill it until 80% of the medication is used? Or can a prescription for a controlled substance only be filled or refilled one or two days before the patient runs out of medication?

  • The answer is no. Kansas does not have any statutes or regulations regarding minimum
elapsed time before a prescription can be filled. The pharmacist is expected to decide if it is appropriate to fill or refill a prescription based on sound professional judgement and following internal facility policies and insurance contract guidelines.

  • Does Kansas have a maximum amount of time between the issuing of a prescription and first fill
or refills where the prescription would be deemed to be expired? For example, if a patient has a prescription for prn omeprazole that is presented for first fill 8 months after it was written, or if the patient went 10 months between refills, is the prescription still valid?

  • The answer is there are no maximum time limits between fills of a prescription that
would void the prescription. The prescription is still valid as long as it has refills and it has not expired.

 Pharmacy Technician Employment Reporting

K.S.A. 65-1663(g) “Every registered pharmacy technician, within 30 days of obtaining new employment or ceasing employment as a pharmacy technician, shall notify the secretary of the name and address of the new employer or cessation of employment.” If you haven’t notified us of your current employer, please do so right away! Registrants and licensees may report changes in employment through their account in the Kansas Board of Pharmacy License Portal at https://ksbop.elicensesoftware.com/portal_logon.aspx. Log on to the portal the same way you would log on to renew your license/registration. (Or sign up if you haven’t 3

already created an account.)
