Avian Influenza Detections in Birds Decline Across EU
EFSA, in collaboration with ECDC and the EU Reference Laboratory, published its quarterly monitoring report covering 29 November 2025 to 27 February 2026. Authorities reported 406 outbreaks of HPAI in domestic birds and 2,108 in wild birds across 32 European countries. Detections in wild birds were three times higher than the same quarter last year and nearly five times higher than two years ago. Since December 2025, detections have declined in line with expected seasonal patterns toward spring. The risk to the general public remains low.
New EFSA Guidance Document Catalogue Improves Access and Use
EFSA has launched a new Catalogue of EFSA Guidance Documents and an EU Library of Food Safety Guidance Documents, providing a single search platform for all EFSA guidance and related national guidance. Updated definitions clarify five categories of EFSA guidance documents by purpose, content, applicability, degree of obligation, and adoption authority. A new standardized process for guidance development improves traceability and predictability for guidance users including applicants and stakeholders.
Safe2Eat 2026 Science-Backed Food Safety Campaign Launch
EFSA and partner agencies across Europe have launched Safe2Eat 2026, a flagship EU-wide public health campaign providing science-based food safety guidance to citizens. The campaign, now in its sixth year and covering 23 participating countries, focuses on three key areas: safe food practices, food and health, and transparency about food contents including additives, flavourings, novel foods, and allergens. According to a 2025 Ipsos survey, the campaign reached 41% of citizens in surveyed countries.
