BEMIDJI, Minn. — A corridor improvement project on Highway 197 in Bemidji will begin on Monday, May 4 according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Motorists should plan for lane closures, reduced speeds, and possible delays.

Beginning with stage 1A, crews will construct temporary lanes that will carry single-lane traffic through the construction zone for the duration of the project. Stage 1B is expected to begin in June and features a full reconstruction of the highway along with installation of a new roundabout at the Menards intersection.

A regional truck detour will be in place to support heavy vehicle traffic through the area. Additional short-term detours for all traffic are planned later in the summer during stages 1C and 1F. Each will last approximately two to three weeks.

Between MnDOT and the City of Bemidji, six roundabouts are planned for construction between 2025 and 2027. MnDOT’s portion includes roundabouts on Hwy 197 to replace the signalized intersections at Hannah Avenue, Middle School Drive, and the Menards intersection.

The project also includes improved pedestrian facilities with a 10-foot multi-use trail on both sides of the highway, upgraded corridor lighting, realignment of Gillette Drive Northwest, and turn-lane improvements.

Construction is planned in three phases during the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons. Phase one, from Gillette Drive Northwest to the Hwy 71 intersection, is scheduled for 2026. In 2027, Phase two will focus on Middle School Drive, followed by Phase 3 near Hannah Avenue.
