Summary

The U.S. Department of State has issued a determination under 22 U.S.C. 2459 that certain cultural objects may be temporarily imported from foreign owners for display at The Jewish Museum in New York and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. The objects are deemed culturally significant and their exhibition is found to be in the national interest. This notice fulfills the requirement for public notice of these cultural property import determinations.

What changed

The Department of State issued a formal determination that certain objects from foreign owners may be temporarily imported into the United States for exhibition purposes at The Jewish Museum (New York, NY) and the North Carolina Museum of Art (Raleigh, NC). The determination finds these objects to be of cultural significance and the proposed temporary exhibition to be in the national interest, as required under the Act of October 19, 1965 (22 U.S.C. 2459).

Museums, cultural institutions, and importers handling foreign cultural property should note that this determination permits temporary import of specific objects that might otherwise be subject to cultural property import restrictions. Institutions planning to borrow or display foreign cultural objects should verify whether their specific objects are covered by such determinations and maintain appropriate documentation to facilitate customs processing.

What to do next

  1. Monitor for updates on cultural property import determinations
  2. Ensure compliance with cultural property documentation requirements when importing objects for exhibition
