Summary

The Department of State issued a determination under Public Notice 12983 allowing the import of culturally significant objects—specifically Henri Matisse's Femme au chapeau—for the 'Matisse's Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal' exhibition at SFMOMA. This determination provides the import authorization required under cultural property protection laws for the exhibition running through 2027.

What changed

The Department of State issued a formal determination (Public Notice 12983, 91 FR 16807) authorizing the temporary import of Matisse's 'Femme au chapeau' as a culturally significant object for display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's exhibition 'Matisse's Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal.' The notice documents the required determination under cultural property import regulations, which permits protected cultural objects to enter the United States for exhibition purposes.

Museums, art galleries, and importers handling this artwork should ensure any customs documentation references this determination and complies with standard cultural property import procedures. No compliance actions or penalties are associated with this notice—it simply facilitates the lawful import of the artwork for public exhibition.
