Summary

The Department of State published a notice determining that objects imported for the 'Fragments of Memory' Exhibition are culturally significant items subject to import review under the Convention on Cultural Property Implementation Act. The notice identifies the specific objects, their country of origin, and the exhibition context. Museums, cultural institutions, and importers involved in cross-border artifact loans should maintain documentation of these determinations for customs compliance purposes.

What changed

The Department of State issued a notice under the Convention on Cultural Property Implementation Act determining that objects being imported for the 'Fragments of Memory' Exhibition meet the criteria for entry into the United States. The notice identifies these objects as culturally significant items subject to review, specifying the exhibition context and relevant public notice reference (Public Notice 12987).\n\nMuseums, cultural institutions, and importers involved in international artifact loans should ensure they maintain documentation of cultural property determinations for customs compliance. These determinations establish that the specified objects have been reviewed and approved for import, which may affect how customs authorities handle entry of these cultural artifacts.

What to do next

  1. Verify all imported cultural objects for this exhibition have corresponding DOS determination documentation
  2. Retain Public Notice 12987 documentation for customs and border inspection purposes
  3. Update artifact loan tracking systems with determination reference numbers
