Wyoming Board Offers ACCME CME Tracking Service for Physicians
Summary
The Wyoming Board of Medicine is offering physicians free access to ACCME's CME tracking service via the Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). The service automatically reports accredited CME credits to participating state boards, simplifying compliance verification for the Board's biennial CME audits.
What changed
The Wyoming Board of Medicine is now providing access to ACCME's CME tracking database, enabling automatic reporting of accredited CME credits to the Board. Physicians who complete CME through participating providers will have their credits automatically shared with WYBOM via the PARS system.
Wyoming physicians remain subject to existing CME requirements: 60 hours every 3 years under WY Board Rules Ch. 3, plus 1 hour of controlled substance CME every 2 years under state law. The Board will use the ACCME database as the primary source during biennial audits. Credits completed before January 1, 2019 are not available electronically; physicians should maintain CME documentation for six years.

Wyoming Board of Medicine RULES AND REGULATIONS, Ch. 3, § 7 (2021) state physicians are to have not
less than sixty (60) hours of continuing medical education (CME) during the previous three (3) years.
State law also requires that when a licensee holds a controlled substance registration in Wyoming, they
must complete one (1) hour of CME related to responsible prescribing of controlled substances or the
treatment of substance abuse disorders every two (2) years. To ensure compliance with these
requirements the Wyoming Board of Medicine conducts a random CME audit every other year.
The collaboration between the ACCME and State Medical Licensing Boards enables CME
providers to report physician participation in accredited CME to a database. This free-of-charge
service allows participating boards, via ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS),
access to their licensees’ CME records with the goal of reducing burdens on physicians and
simplifying the audit process for boards.
When a licensee completes an accredited CME activity from a participating CME provider, he or she
may be asked to provide information such as state license number or national provider identifier (NPI),
name, and birthdate. This information will enable ACCME’s CME system to automatically share
information about credits earned with participating state medical boards.
If a CME provider is not participating with ACCME, a physician can ask the CME provider if they are
willing to participate with ACCME to share CME information and share credits earned.
The Wyoming Board of Medicine is pleased to offer licensees who use these CME providers the
convenience of having credit hours automatically reported. Physicians should note, however, that e-
reporting has only been in place since January 1, 2019. WYBOM will not receive electronic confirmation
of CME credits completed before that date, so licensees are responsible for maintaining documentation.
Licensees are advised to retain CME records for six years, so they may be prepared to provide
documentation of prior CME credits if randomly selected by the Wyoming Board of Medicine for a CME
compliance audit.
When a periodic CME audit occurs, Board staff will first access the ACCME database, if the physician
is not on the ACCME database, the physician will be contacted to submit proof of compliant CME at
that time.
