What changed

The California State Archives launched Minerva as an online catalog giving public access to summary-level descriptions of its holdings spanning 300+ million items. The collections cover the full breadth of California state government documentary activity, including constitutional records from 1849, land grant records from Spanish and Mexican eras, campaign contribution statements, court case files, legislative committee files, and original laws. Users are directed to use the keyword search box or Advanced Search to locate collections organized by the state agency, committee, or legislator that created the records, and to contact the Archives Reference Desk for specific record requests. The Archives has also published a Statement on Reparative Description acknowledging the importance of inclusive, respectful descriptive practices and inviting community input on language and collaboration.

Affected parties include government agencies, legal professionals, historians, and researchers seeking access to California state government records. The catalog is organized by creating entity, so users must identify the relevant state agency, committee, or legislator before searching. The Archives notes that cataloging is ongoing, meaning not all collections may yet be described, and advises that recent changes to catalog records may be encountered during the access process.

Statement on Reparative Description

The California State Archives recognizes the importance of reparative archival description in ensuring our records are inclusive, respectful, and do not cause harm to those using our collections. While we continue to identify collections for descriptive remediation, research community-generated preferred terminology guides, integrate these standards into our local descriptive practices, and contextualize archival materials and historic descriptions, we recognize that we cannot, and should not, complete this work in isolation. As such, we hope the larger community will engage in this work with us; identifying issues and concerns about collection– and item–level descriptions, suggesting preferred language and helpful resources, and most importantly, opportunities for collaboration and relationship building with the communities who create, use, and are represented in the materials under our stewardship.

Please contact a collections archivist with suggestions, feedback, and questions about our work or to identify collections in need of reparative description.
