Proposed Amendment to 21 NCAC 56.1602 Surveying Procedures
The North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors proposes to amend 21 NCAC 56.1602 (Surveying Procedures) Section (h) to clarify requirements for documenting the method of area computation. The proposed amendment would require surveyors to state the computation method on plats, written descriptions, or other documents, and would explicitly prohibit area computations by estimation, planimeter, scale, or copying from another source, except for tracts with inaccessible areas. A public hearing is scheduled for January 14, 2026.
Fall 2025 Newsletter: License Renewals Open, AI Guidelines Adopted, Subdivision Certification Guidance
The North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBELS) published its Fall 2025 newsletter announcing the opening of the 2026 license renewal window on December 1, 2025. The Board noted recent adoption of AI guidelines for licensees and provided guidance on certifying preliminary subdivision plans under revised Board Rule .0701, effective May 1, 2024.
Chairman Goel Outlines Priorities for NC Engineering and Surveying Board
Dr. Vinod K. Goel has been appointed Chairman of the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBELS). In his February 2026 message, Chairman Goel outlined priorities including upholding ethics standards, ensuring transparent regulatory processes, supporting licensees through clear communication, and strengthening public trust in the professions. NCBELS regulates over 36,000 licensed professional engineers and land surveyors and approximately 5,000 licensed firms.
