NDPC Kicks Off 2nd Edition of DPO Certification in Abuja and Lagos
Summary
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced the second edition of its Data Protection Officer (DPO) certification training programme in Abuja and Lagos. National Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji delivered opening remarks, highlighting Nigeria's goal to become a global privacy hub and address the worldwide scarcity of qualified DPOs. Participants from the first edition are now actively working as DPOs, and current participants will receive internship opportunities upon completion.
The expansion of NDPC's DPO certification programme signals increased regulatory focus on building privacy compliance capacity within Nigeria. As the regulatory landscape matures, organisations may face greater scrutiny regarding DPO appointment and qualifications. This workforce development initiative could reduce reliance on foreign privacy consultants and support local talent pipelines for data protection roles across banking, telecoms, healthcare, and technology sectors.
What changed
The NDPC has expanded its DPO certification programme to a second edition, adding Abuja alongside Lagos as training locations. The programme aims to develop globally competitive data protection professionals and position Nigeria as a hub for privacy expertise. Dr. Olatunji emphasized that most graduates of the first edition are now employed as DPOs, and a Faculty for DPOs will be established to provide ongoing guidance.
Organisations subject to Nigeria's data protection obligations will benefit from an expanding pool of certified DPOs. The programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, creating job opportunities in the privacy sector. Companies seeking DPO services or individuals pursuing privacy careers should monitor NDPC's announcements regarding programme completion and certification status.
