Summary

Brazil's INPI has extended all filing and prosecution deadlines falling on April 20, 21, and 23, 2026, because the agency will be closed on those dates. April 20 is a facultative day under Portaria MGI nº 11.460/2025, April 21 is a national holiday, and April 23 is a state holiday in Rio de Janeiro under Lei nº 5.198/2008. Deadlines for April 20 and 21 are moved to April 22, 2026, at the headquarters and all regional units; deadlines for April 23 at the Rio de Janeiro headquarters are moved to April 24, 2026.

“O INPI informa que os prazos com vencimento nos dias 20, 21 e 23 de abril de 2026 serão prorrogados porque não haverá expediente nesses dias.”

What changed

INPI published a notice extending all administrative deadlines that would otherwise fall on April 20, 21, and 23, 2026, due to closures. April 20 is a facultative day under a federal order, April 21 is Carnival (a national holiday), and April 23 is a state holiday in Rio de Janeiro. Affected parties with deadlines on April 20 or 21 now have until April 22, 2026, to act; those with deadlines on April 23 in Rio de Janeiro have until April 24, 2026.

For any party prosecuting patents, trademarks, or industrial designs before INPI, this means existing response deadlines falling on those three dates are automatically extended. Filers should verify their specific deadline dates and ensure internal docketing systems reflect the new dates to avoid inadvertently missing the shifted deadlines.
