HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. 49 and East Wortham Rd. in Harrison County.
As part of a $714,000 project to make intersection improvements from Desoto Park Rd. to just south of East Wortham Rd., the new signal will be placed in flash mode starting Thursday, April 23 for a week or two before the signal begins full operation. Motorists can expect to encounter a flashing yellow light when approaching the intersection from U.S. 49 and a flashing red light when approaching the intersection from East Wortham Rd.
While this work is being completed, MDOT reminds motorists to use proper protocol when approaching a flashing red and a flashing yellow traffic signal. There is no need to come to a complete stop when approaching a flashing yellow light, but motorists should stay alert for other drivers entering the highway and proceed with caution. Cross-traffic approaching the intersection from East Wortham Rd. is advised to **** follow the same rules as a two-way stop intersection, including yielding to oncoming traffic when turning and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks.
The project’s scope of work includes adding turn lanes and a traffic signal at the intersection. It was awarded to Powell Construction Services of Vancleave and is expected to be complete within the next few weeks.
