NIAID Increases K22 Career Transition Award Salary Cap to $249,000/Year
Summary
NIAID issued Notice NOT-AI-26-001 modifying salary support limits for PAR-25-251, the NIAID Career Transition Award (K22). The annual direct cost cap increases from $150,000/$100,000 (years 1-2) to $249,000 per year for up to 2 years, inclusive of salary, fringe benefits, and research costs. The change applies to applications with due dates on or after June 12, 2026.
What changed
The Notice modifies PAR-25-251 by increasing the total award amount from $250,000 over two years ($150,000 year one, $100,000 year two) to $498,000 over two years ($249,000 per year). The new amount combines salary, fringe benefits, and research development costs into a single cap, eliminating the previous separate $50,000/year salary limit for the career award recipient. Application budget justification templates are also updated to reflect the new funding structure.
Affected applicants and research institutions should update their budget planning and application materials to reflect the substantially increased funding ceiling. The change is effective for due dates on or after June 12, 2026, giving applicants approximately two months to prepare compliant submissions.
What to do next
- Review updated budget parameters for K22 applications
- Update budget justifications to reflect new $249,000 annual cap
- Ensure submissions use new template language for due dates on or after June 12, 2026

Section IV. Application and Submission Information
R&R Budget
All instructions in the How to Apply - Application Guide must be followed, with the following additional instructions:
- For period of support, indicate the total period of support being requested: 2 years.
- Detailed budget information is not required at the time of application for Phase I, the postdoctoral training phase.
- Budget Justification. A Budget Justification must be provided at the time of submission of the K22 application. Therefore, for the purpose of this NOFO, it is sufficient to submit a Budget Justification attachment stating the following information: "The NIAID K22 initiative provides up to $250,000 in funds to support the candidate's development of a research program at a U.S. institution. The funding is distributed as up to $150,000 the first year and up to $100,000 the second year, direct costs. The funds can be used at the PD/PI's discretion for research development costs, including supplies, equipment, technical personnel, travel to research meetings or training, tuition/fees for courses and computational services. No more than $50,000/year will be used to support the PD/PI's salary." Modified to Read (changes shown in *bold italics*):
