Intelligence Briefing Trade & Sanctions Japan Freezes 78 Iran Entities Under UN Sanctio...

Tokyo reapplying lifted UN sanctions following UNSC Resolution 2231, diverging from U.S. approach.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced the reapplication of UN Iran sanctions following UNSC Resolution 2231, reimposing measures from Resolutions 1737, 1747, 1803, and 1929 that had been lifted. The Government of Japan is now freezing assets of 78 Iranian entities under the renewed sanctions regime.

The action comes as the EU designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. However, Japan's move represents a distinct approach, reapplying multilateral UN sanctions rather than independent European designations. The EU's IRGC designation triggered immediate asset freezes across member states.

International trade compliance teams say companies operating in jurisdictions with different sanctions approaches face increased complexity. Entities with Iran exposure must now navigate overlapping—and sometimes conflicting—sanctions frameworks across the U.S., EU, Japan, and UN.
