CPA Amendment Regulations 2026 Gazette - Direct Marketing

The Information Regulator of South Africa has issued a media statement noting the Government Gazette published on 15 April 2026 relating to the Consumer Protection Act Amendment Regulations 2026, which introduce measures to curb unsolicited marketing communications and spam calls. The Regulator emphasises that compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act remains mandatory regardless of whether a consumer is registered on the pre-emptive block or opt-out registry. The statement clarifies that direct marketers must still obtain consent from data subjects under section 69 of POPIA before sending direct marketing messages via unsolicited electronic communication.

International Conference on Digital Platform Governance, Pretoria, February 2026

Media, digital and information regulators from over 50 countries will convene in Pretoria on 12-13 February 2026 for the International Conference on Digital Platform Governance, co-hosted by the ICT and Media Regulators Forum of South Africa and the Social Media 4 Peace South Africa coalition, with support from UNESCO, the African Network of Regulatory Authorities, the Francophone Network of Regulatory Authorities, the European University Institute, and the European Union. The conference will conclude with the presentation of the Pretoria Action Plan on Digital Platform Governance, a regulator-led multi-stakeholder agenda committing authorities to coordinated action grounded in international human rights standards, transparency, accountability, due diligence, and user empowerment.

International Data Privacy Day Conference, Polokwane, January 28, 2026
