What changed

The Virginia Board of Optometry has formally added cholinergic agonists as a permitted category of therapeutic pharmaceutical agents in the TPA-Formulary under 18VAC105-20-47. This regulatory update expands the scope of medications that TPA-certified optometrists may prescribe to include cholinergic agonists as Schedule VI topical agents for treating conditions of the eye and adnexa.

Affected parties, specifically TPA-certified optometrists in Virginia, will have expanded prescribing authority for this category of drugs effective May 25, 2022. Pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors of cholinergic agonists may see increased utilization in the optometric setting as a result of this formulary addition.
