PHMSA Hazardous Materials Special Permit Actions Notice
Summary
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has issued a notice detailing actions taken on special permit applications for hazardous materials transportation. The notice includes a comment period deadline of April 17, 2026, for interested parties to submit feedback on these granted or denied applications.
What changed
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has published a notice detailing its decisions on various special permit applications related to the transportation of hazardous materials. These actions involve modifications to existing permits and authorization for new methods or materials, affecting regulations such as 49 CFR Parts 172, 173, 175, and 180. Specific applications include those from The Cylinder Maintenance Company, Inc., Lunar Energy, Inc., Caterpillar Inc., and SpaceX, among others, covering a range of hazardous materials from cylinders to lithium-ion batteries and spacecraft.
Regulated entities involved in the transportation of hazardous materials should review the specific applications and the nature of the permits granted or denied to understand potential impacts on their operations. Interested parties have until April 17, 2026, to submit comments to PHMSA regarding these actions. Failure to comply with hazardous materials regulations can result in significant penalties, and understanding these special permit actions is crucial for maintaining compliance.
What to do next
- Review granted and denied special permit applications for potential operational impacts.
- Submit comments to PHMSA by April 17, 2026, if desired.
