USGS Funding for Avian Influenza Research in Wild Birds
Summary
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a cooperative agreement funding opportunity for research on avian influenza in wild birds. The funding aims to enhance understanding of the virus's ecology, transmission, and host response, with awards up to $499,000. Applications are due April 28, 2026.
What changed
The USGS has announced a funding opportunity (G26AS00097) for research into the immunological and ecological dynamics of avian influenza in wild bird species. This initiative, offered through the North Atlantic Coast Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) program, seeks to advance basic understanding of avian influenza ecology and integrate transcriptomics with traditional testing methods to better comprehend host susceptibility and infection responses. The total award amount can reach up to $499,000.
Eligible applicants must be participating partners of the North Atlantic Coast CESU. Interested parties must submit their electronically filed applications through Grants.gov by April 28, 2026. The funding instrument is a cooperative agreement, and no cost-sharing or matching is required. This opportunity is for research and data collection under Assistance Listing 15.808.
What to do next
- Verify eligibility as a North Atlantic Coast CESU partner.
- Prepare and submit application through Grants.gov by April 28, 2026.
- Review Program Announcement G26AS00097 and associated attachments for detailed requirements.

Description
The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research focused on understanding the immunological and ecological dynamics of avian influenza spread, persistence, and transmission in wild bird species. This research will: 1) advance understanding of basic avian influenza ecology in wild bird host species, and 2) pair transcriptomics to traditional infection and serologic testing methods to enhance our understanding of host susceptibility and infection response.
