Cooperative Agreement for Waterbird AIV Research
Summary
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a cooperative agreement for research on Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) infection and seroprevalence in waterbirds. The funding opportunity, with a maximum award of $499,000, is open to CESU partners and has a closing date of April 28, 2026.
What changed
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has announced a funding opportunity through the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Units (CESU) Program for research focused on Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) infection and seroprevalence in waterbird species. The research will investigate bird movement in relation to infection status and analyze pathology exams of recovered transmitter-marked birds to identify disease-specific signatures. The total program funding is $499,000, with an expected award of $499,000.
Eligible applicants must be participating partners of the Piedmont-South Atlantic Coast Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit. The application deadline is April 28, 2026. This is a funding opportunity announcement, not a rule, and therefore does not impose new regulatory obligations but rather provides financial assistance for research activities.
What to do next
- Review program announcement and eligibility requirements for CESU partners.
- Prepare and submit application materials, including biographical sketches, current and pending support, project abstract, and geospatial data instructions, by April 28, 2026.

Description
The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research focused on understanding AIV infection and seroprevalence in understudied waterbird species as well as the movement of transmitter marked birds relative to current and previous infection status. Special emphasis of this work would focus on using pathology exams to understand the cause of death of birds that were marked with transmitters and recovered upon morality to assess disease specific signatures in movement.
