EU Statement Marks Third Anniversary of Sudan Conflict
The EU High Representative, on behalf of the European Union, issued a statement on April 21, 2026 marking three years since the outbreak of war in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The statement reaffirms EU commitment to Sudan's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, renews calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, demands safe humanitarian access, and supports accountability for grave violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law. At the Sudan Conference in Berlin on April 15, 2026, international donors pledged €1.5 billion in aid, including €812 million from the EU and its Member States. The EU indicated it will examine additional sanctions aimed at the war economy.
Tajani and Tripodi Attend EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Undersecretary Maria Tripodi attended the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg on April 21, 2026. The 27 EU Member States discussed the twentieth sanctions package against Russia, Ukraine reconstruction support, hybrid threat measures targeting Moldova, a Middle East ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, and preparations for EU-Syria and EU-Armenia high-level dialogues. Italy reaffirmed commitments to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and support for Lebanese government reforms as the UNIFIL mission approaches conclusion.
Italy–Poland Strategic Forum: Tajani and Sikorski Sign Cooperation Agreement
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski convened the Italy–Poland Strategic Forum in Rome on April 22, 2026, signing an agreement to strengthen political and diplomatic dialogue and strategic cooperation on foreign policy within the EU, UN, and NATO frameworks, while reaffirming shared support for Ukraine. The forum brought together over 150 participants from institutions, academia, think tanks, and business, discussing energy security, migration, countering disinformation, Western Balkans, and Africa. Bilateral trade reached EUR 37 billion in 2025, with Italian exports rising 5.9%.
