FTC Seeks Extension for Warranty Rule Information Collection
Summary
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has published a notice requesting public comment on an extension for the information collection requirements related to its Warranty Rule. The comment period is open until April 29, 2026.
What changed
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is seeking an extension from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for the information collection requirements associated with its Warranty Rule. This notice serves as a request for public comment on this proposed extension, which is a standard procedural step for continuing existing information collection activities under the Paperwork Reduction Act. The document itself does not introduce new obligations but rather seeks to continue the existing framework for information collection related to warranties.
Regulated entities, particularly manufacturers and retailers subject to the Warranty Rule, should review the FTC's request and consider submitting comments by the deadline of April 29, 2026. While this is a procedural extension, any feedback provided could potentially influence future interpretations or modifications of the information collection requirements. Compliance officers should ensure their warranty-related record-keeping practices align with the existing rule, as the extension is expected to be granted.
What to do next
- Review the FTC's notice regarding the Warranty Rule information collection extension.
- Submit comments to the FTC by April 29, 2026, if applicable.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
Title: Rule Concerning Disclosure of Written Consumer Product Warranty Terms and Conditions, 16 CFR part 701.
OMB Control Number: 3084-0111.
Type of Review: Extension of a currently approved collection.
Abstract: The Warranty Rule is one of three rules [1 ] that the FTC implemented pursuant to requirements of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 15 U.S.C. 2301 et seq. (Warranty Act or Act). [2 ] The Warranty Rule specifies the information that must appear in a written warranty on a consumer product [3 ] costing more than $15. The Rule tracks Section 102(a) of the Warranty Act, [4 ] specifying information that must appear in the written warranty and, for certain disclosures, mandates the exact language that must be used. [5 ] Neither the Warranty Rule nor the Act requires that a manufacturer or retailer warrant a consumer product in writing, but if they choose to do so, the warranty must comply with the Rule.
Estimated Annual Hours Burden: 209,048 hours.
Estimated Annual Labor Cost Burden: $28,977,188.
On December 17, 2025, the FTC sought comment on the information collection requirements associated with the Rule. 90 FR 58557. The FTC received three relevant comments, with each appearing to support the renewal of the information collections. [6 ] Pursuant to OMB regulations, 5 CFR part 1320, that implement the PRA, 44 U.S.C. 3501 et seq., the FTC is providing this second opportunity for public comment while seeking OMB approval to renew the pre-existing clearance for the Rule. For more details about the Rule requirements and the basis for the calculations summarized below, see 90 FR 58557.
