Nokia Patent US12587336B2 Improves Positioning Accuracy
Summary
The USPTO has granted Nokia Technologies Oy patent US12587336B2, which details a transmit beamforming method for improving positioning accuracy and reducing power consumption in devices. The patent was filed on March 29, 2021, and officially granted on March 24, 2026.
What changed
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Nokia Technologies Oy patent US12587336B2. This patent covers a novel approach to transmit beamforming for positioning, aiming to enhance accuracy and achieve power savings by optimizing reference signal transmissions. The technology involves a location management device generating angle of departure information for reference signals, which a transmitting device then uses to determine an optimal beamforming solution.
This patent grant signifies a new intellectual property asset for Nokia in the telecommunications sector, specifically related to positioning technologies. While not a direct regulatory mandate for other companies, it establishes intellectual property rights that could influence future product development and licensing in areas like mobile device location services and network infrastructure. Companies operating in this space should be aware of this patent's claims, particularly concerning beamforming techniques for positioning, as it may impact their own innovation and product roadmaps.

Abstract
Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a transmit beamforming for positioning. A location management device generates information regarding an angle of departure, the angle of departure being expected for transmission of reference signals for positioning and transmits the information to a device transmitting the reference signals. The device may determine a transmit beamforming solution for transmitting the reference signals based on the angle of departure. In this way, power savings can be achieved due to decreased reference signal overhead. Further, positioning accuracy can be improved through appropriately beamformed reference signal transmissions.
