Department of Taxes Recommends Protecting Against Scams
Tue, 04/14/2026 - 12:00
Montpelier, Vt. - As Vermonters are working to file their personal income taxes ahead of the April 15 deadline, the Department of Taxes reminds them to be on their guard against tax scams.
“There are a few things that taxpayers can keep in mind to protect themselves from scams during tax season and at any time throughout the year,” said Commissioner of Taxes Bill Shouldice. “The overall message is that if anything about a communication, website, or interaction feels off to you, step away and contact the Department of Taxes directly.”
The Department of Taxes asks Vermonters to keep the following tips in mind:
- When accessing the department’s website (tax.vermont.gov) or secure taxpayer portal (myVTax.vermont.gov), always check for “vermont.gov” in the url to make sure that you are on the official site. Scammers may operate sites with similar names with the intent of tricking taxpayers.
- The Vermont Department of Taxes will never send you unsolicited text messages or a robocall. Those are not tools we use.
- Scammers will use the threat of tax enforcement action to frighten people into hasty sharing of personal information. If you receive a call, email, or other communication that appears to be from the Vermont Department of Taxes that feels off in any way, especially one that is urging you to do something immediately to avoid some sort of tax penalty:
- Hang up the phone or close the email without clicking any links. Do not give any personal information.
- Get in touch with the department by phone at 802-828-2865 or email to verify whether the communication is legitimate.
