Summary

The USPTO has published a patent application (US20260085055A1) for a novel monomer and a chemically recyclable polymer material comprising the same. The application, filed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, describes a monomer formed by bonding a pentagonal cyclic olefin molecule with a photosensitive molecule to enable chemical recycling.

What changed

This document is a patent application, not a regulatory rule or guidance. It describes a novel monomer and a polymer material that can be chemically recycled. The monomer is formed by linking a pentagonal cyclic olefin molecule with a photosensitive molecule, allowing for reversible chemical changes in response to external stimuli. This innovation aims to control mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting polymer.

As this is a patent application, there are no immediate compliance obligations for regulated entities. However, companies involved in polymer manufacturing, materials science, or chemical recycling may find this technology relevant for future research and development. The application was filed on August 22, 2025, and is designated for publication on March 26, 2026.

Abstract

The present invention provides a novel monomer, which provides a new functionality by including a novel monomer formed by a bond between a pentagonal cyclic olefin molecule and a photosensitive molecule, may control mechanical and thermal properties, and is formed by a bond between Chemical Formula 1 and any one of Chemical Formulae 2 to 4 in order to perform chemical recycling through reversible chemical changes according to the external stimulus.
