Summary

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is urging residents to prepare for dangerous storms, including a Level 4 risk of thunderstorms and tornadoes. The notice provides safety recommendations and directs consumers to resources for storm preparation and insurance inventory.

What changed

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has issued a notice urging all state residents to be vigilant and take precautions due to a significant risk of dangerous storms, including thunderstorms and tornadoes. The alert highlights a Level 4 (out of 5) risk in central North Carolina, the highest in years, and emphasizes the importance of having a plan and securing homes.

The notice provides practical safety recommendations such as staying tuned to weather updates, identifying safe shelter locations, securing outdoor items, trimming trees, parking vehicles away from trees, and creating a video inventory of belongings for insurance purposes. It also directs consumers to the NCDOI website for further storm preparation guidance. While this is a notice and not a regulatory mandate, compliance officers should ensure internal communications reflect these recommendations and that consumer-facing materials are updated if necessary.

What to do next

  1. Review and disseminate storm preparedness recommendations to relevant internal teams and external stakeholders.
  2. Ensure consumer-facing resources on storm preparation and insurance inventory are up-to-date and accessible.

RALEIGH Mar 16, 2026 Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey strongly urges all North Carolinians to be vigilant and take precautions as dangerous storms threaten much of the state.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, most of North Carolina faces an increased risk of thunderstorms and tornadoes today, with a Level 4 (out of 5) Risk in the central part of the state, the highest in years.

Commissioner Causey encourages everyone across North Carolina to pay attention and have a plan.  “I urge residents to take these severe weather warnings seriously and be aware,” Commissioner Causey said. “Secure your home and protect your family before these storms arrive.”

Commissioner Causey recommends:

  • Stay tuned to local TV/radio news for the latest weather updates and instructions.
  • Make sure you have a safe place to go if severe weather approaches, like a small interior room in your home.  Mobile homes are generally not safe in intense storms, so seek shelter elsewhere.
  • Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, plants, etc.
  • Cut dead or weak tree branches close to your home.
  • Park vehicles in a garage or away from trees if possible.
  • Take a video inventory of belongings in your home for insurance purposes. For more information on how to prepare for a storm, please visit our website at https://www.ncdoi.gov/consumers/disaster/how-prepare-storm.
