What changed

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted patent US12582517B2 to Edwards Lifesciences Corporation for a novel sealing member for prosthetic heart valves. The patent, filed on April 13, 2021, describes a component designed to minimize perivalvular leakage, a common issue with prosthetic heart valves, by incorporating ribs and connectors that interface with the valve's frame. This grant signifies the USPTO's recognition of the innovation in medical device technology.

This patent grant is primarily an intellectual property event for Edwards Lifesciences Corporation and does not impose new direct compliance obligations on other entities. However, it may influence competitive product development and licensing strategies within the medical device sector, particularly for manufacturers of prosthetic heart valves. Companies operating in this space should be aware of the patented technology and its potential implications for their own product designs and intellectual property portfolios.

Abstract

A prosthetic heart valve can include a frame, a valve component, a sealing member, and a retaining member. The frame can be radially compressible and expandable between a radially-compressed configuration and a radially-expanded configuration. The valve component can be disposed within and coupled to the frame and have a plurality of leaflets. The sealing member can have a plurality of ribs and a plurality of connectors. The ribs can be coupled to and extend radially outwardly from the frame when the frame is in the radially-expanded configuration. The connectors can be coupled to and extend radially between the frame and the ribs. The sealing member can be configured to reduce or prevent perivalvular leakage around the prosthetic heart valve. The retaining member can be coupled to the frame and the sealing member and can retain the sealing member at a desired spacing relative to the frame.
