Infant formula recalled due to botulism risk
Summary

What changed
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has issued an alert regarding a voluntary recall of all ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula products, including all unexpired lots of formula cans and single-serve "anywhere" sticks. The affected products have specific lot codes and 'Use by' dates, and consumers are advised to check their pantries for these items.
Parents and caregivers are instructed to stop using any ByHeart infant formula products immediately and to discard them. While no illnesses have been reported in New Hampshire to date, the DHHS advises that anyone with a child experiencing symptoms of infant botulism (constipation, difficulty feeding, weak cry, muscle weakness, or paralysis) should notify their healthcare provider immediately. Consumers can find more information on the FDA website and report suspected illnesses to the DPH.

Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Public Health (DPH) advises parents and caregivers not to use certain lots of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. The company has voluntarily recalled the products because they were linked to a multistate outbreak of infant botulism.
The recalled ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula has the following lot codes and “Use by” dates, which are located on the bottom of each can:
- Lot: 206VABP/251261P2 ("Use by 01 Dec 2026")
- Lot: 206VABP/251131P2 ("Use by 01 Dec 2026")
“It’s important for families and caregivers to check their pantries for these products, which have a long shelf life,” said DPH Director Iain Watt. “Anyone who has a can with one of the recalled lot codes should stop using the formula immediately and throw it away to protect your child’s health.”
There have been no reports of illnesses associated with this recall in New Hampshire to date. ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula is available for sale online and at major retailers nationwide.
Infant botulism happens when a baby swallows spores from a type of bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, which leads to the bacteria multiplying and producing toxins in the baby's large intestine. The earliest signs of illness may be constipation, difficulty feeding (sucking and swallowing), a weak and altered cry, or muscle weakness, which can progress to paralysis and difficulty breathing. Anyone with a child experiencing any of these symptoms should notify their child’s healthcare provider immediately.
DPH continues to closely monitor this outbreak and any health impacts in New Hampshire in coordination with local and federal partners. For more information about the outbreak, visit the FDA website. To report a suspected illness associated with this outbreak in New Hampshire, contact DPH at 603-271-4496.
