Methods and systems for determining brain and nerve function status via pupillary analysis
Summary
The USPTO granted Patent US12588846B2 to Hadasit Medical Research Services & Development Ltd. covering methods, systems, and devices for determining brain and/or nerve function status by analyzing pupillary response through closed eyelids. The patent includes 17 claims and covers technology that tracks pupil location, calculates pupil size, and monitors pupillary reflex using transmitted light analysis.
What changed
USPTO granted Patent US12588846B2 to Hadasit Medical Research Services & Development Ltd. (inventors: Ilan Carmel, Yousef Farraj, Jose Cohen) for a system and method of assessing brain and nerve function status. The technology captures light transmitted through a patient's closed eyelid, analyzes pixel gray levels to track pupil location and size, and monitors pupillary reflex to determine neurological status. The patent contains 17 claims covering both system and method aspects with CPC classifications including A61B 5/163, A61B 3/14, and related diagnostic device categories.
Medical device manufacturers and healthcare providers developing or using pupillary assessment technology should review the patent claims to understand protected aspects of this diagnostic approach. Patent grants do not create compliance obligations but establish intellectual property rights that may affect product development strategies. No action is required for regulatory compliance purposes.

Abstract
A system, device, and methods configured for determining a status of brain and/or nerve functions of a patient having closed eyelids, comprising obtaining a plurality of consecutive frames which captures light transmitted through the closed eyelid of the patient and analyzing the gray level of pixels within frames of the plurality of consecutive frames such as to track the location of the pupil, calculate the size of the pupil, and/or monitor a pupillary reflex, and determining a status of brain and/or nerve functions of the patient based, at least in part, on the analysis.
