Summary

USPTO published patent application US20260108248A1, filed October 10, 2025, for pulmonary treatment devices using shape-memory material designed for advanced COPD patients. Inventors Mark L. Mathis, Michael W. Lau, and Kevin Mitz describe devices that expand under tension and recoil to corkscrew into damaged lung tissue, enabling re-tensioning and lung volume reduction. This is a published patent application, not a granted patent.

“These treatments reduce trapped air volume, tension lung tissue and enhance lung elastic recoil.”

About this source

USPTO classification A61M covers devices that introduce or withdraw fluids from the body: infusion pumps, catheters, syringes, inhalers, wound drainage, dialysis equipment, and fluid-handling microfluidics. Every newly published application in A61M lands in this feed, around 205 a month. Applications publish 18 months after filing. Watch this if you compete in infusion therapy or drug delivery, file freedom-to-operate analyses for medical device startups, scout acquisition targets in cardiovascular or respiratory devices, or track hospital R&D arms that are quietly patenting clinical innovations.

What changed

USPTO published patent application US20260108248A1 for pulmonary treatment devices, systems, and methods using shape-memory material to treat advanced COPD. The application describes devices that expand under tension and recoil to corkscrew into compromised lung tissue, enabling tissue re-tensioning and lung volume reduction. This publication makes the application publicly available but does not grant patent rights.

Medical device manufacturers and healthcare technology developers involved in pulmonary interventions or COPD treatment devices should monitor this application to assess potential prior art implications for their own IP portfolios. The published application provides public notice of the inventors' claimed technical approach using shape-memory alloys for tissue mechanical coupling.

DEVICES, TREATMENTS AND METHODS TO RESTORE TISSUE ELASTIC RECOIL

Application US20260108248A1 Kind: A1 Apr 23, 2026

Inventors

Mark L. Mathis, Michael W. Lau, Kevin Mitz

Abstract

Pulmonary treatment devices, systems and methods of use are provided which take into account the vast tissue damage of advanced COPD sufferers and provide treatments designed specifically to treat the particularly compromised lung tissues that are present in these patients. These treatments reduce trapped air volume, tension lung tissue and enhance lung elastic recoil. In particular, a variety of embodiments of pulmonary treatment devices are provided. The devices are comprised of a shape memory material wherein the devices are able to be expanded under tension, and then are able to recoil back toward an original relaxed or resting shape as the devices are deployed into the tissue. This action causes the pulmonary treatment devices to corkscrew into damaged tissue, becoming sufficiently entwined to allow pulling of the tissue by retraction of the device. This in turn re-tensions the lung causing lung volume reduction.
