California Pharmacy Board May 2025 Newsletter: CE Requirements, Self-Assessment Deadline, New PIC Training
Summary
The California State Board of Pharmacy has released its May 2025 newsletter announcing that a free Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) training webinar is now available on the PharmEd learning management system, required prior to PIC approval. The newsletter reminds licensees that self-assessment forms must be completed by July 1, 2025 (every odd-numbered year) per CCR section 1732.5(b). Continuing education requirements include at least 30 hours per renewal period, with mandatory 1-hour Board-provided law CE and 1-hour Board-provided ethics CE per California Code of Regulations.
Pharmacy licensees who have not yet completed their PIC training webinar should prioritize enrollment on PharmEd before their next PIC appointment. The Board's stated intent to update PIC forms more frequently beginning in 2026 signals that licensees should establish processes for monitoring Board communications between renewal cycles, rather than relying solely on biennial compliance checks. The ongoing evolution of compounding regulations, with public comment periods and four revisions to proposed text, indicates that compounding pharmacy operators should actively track AB 1503 for implementation milestones.

What changed
The May 2025 California Board of Pharmacy newsletter summarizes several ongoing regulatory developments affecting pharmacy licensees. The Board announces that its PIC training webinar is now available on the PharmEd platform as a prerequisite for PIC appointment, with one hour of CE awarded upon completion. The newsletter also reviews the Board's completion of its Sunset Review process and discusses proposed compounding regulation updates, noting a year of public rulemaking activity. SB 339 is addressed as moving from emergency to permanent status.
Pharmacy licensees and PIC designees should note the July 1, 2025 deadline for self-assessment form completion under CCR section 1732.5(b). The Board indicates it will provide more timely updates to PIC forms annually or as laws change starting in 2026, suggesting increased frequency of regulatory communications. All three CE courses (PIC training, law CE, ethics CE) must be completed every renewal cycle.
What to do next
- Complete at least 30 CE hours each renewal period (every two years), including at least 1.00 CE hour of Board-provided law CE and 1.00 CE hour of Board-provided ethics CE per CCR section 1732.5(b)
- Complete the free Pharmacist-in-Charge training webinar on PharmEd prior to approval and appointment as PIC
- Complete self-assessment forms by July 1, 2025 (every odd-numbered year)
