California Pharmacy Board May 2025 Newsletter: CE Requirements, Self-Assessment Deadline, New PIC Training
The California State Board of Pharmacy has released its May 2025 newsletter announcing that a free Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) training webinar is now available on the PharmEd learning management system, required prior to PIC approval. The newsletter reminds licensees that self-assessment forms must be completed by July 1, 2025 (every odd-numbered year) per CCR section 1732.5(b). Continuing education requirements include at least 30 hours per renewal period, with mandatory 1-hour Board-provided law CE and 1-hour Board-provided ethics CE per California Code of Regulations.
Pharmacy Laws, Immunization Changes, Standard Care Transition
Governor Gavin Newsom has enacted fourteen new bills focused on California pharmacy laws, as summarized in the California State Board of Pharmacy's November 2025 newsletter. AB 1503 transitions pharmacist immunization authority from protocol-based to a standard of care practice model for patients three years of age and older, effective January 1, 2026, with the Board to issue a special edition newsletter in early 2026. Other new laws address reproductive health confidentiality protections (AB 82), vaccine coverage baselines (AB 144), medication abortion access (AB 260), mental health support, drug theft reporting, and albuterol and epinephrine standing orders for schools.
California Board of Pharmacy AB 1503 Special Edition Newsletter
The California State Board of Pharmacy has released a special edition newsletter summarizing Assembly Bill 1503 (Berman, Chapter 196, Statutes of 2026), the Board's sunset measure extending operations through January 1, 2027. AB 1503 transitions pharmacist-provided patient care to a standard of care practice model, establishes a Pharmacy Technician Advisory Committee, expands pharmacist authority to administer vaccines to patients three years of age and older, and introduces new requirements including emergency refill provisions and pharmacy records digital conversion. The Board will release its Pharmacy Law Update 2026 Edition online webinar in the first quarter of 2026 to further assist licensees with implementation.
