The rules, designated S 227/2026, take effect on 20 April 2026. Rule 8(1B) prohibits vehicles other than omnibuses from using bus-only lanes at all times, with exceptions for authorised vehicles including emergency services, works vehicles, and vehicles with permits from relevant authorities. What changed

The amendment introduces bus-only lanes as a new category of traffic signage, defining their physical markings and operational restrictions. Rule 7 is amended to insert the definition of bus-only lane with specifications for red line markings. Rule 8 is amended to prohibit non-omnibus vehicles from bus-only lanes at all times, with exceptions for authority vehicles, emergency works vehicles, and vehicles authorised by statutory boards or bus depot licensees. The amendment also updates cross-references throughout the principal Rules.

Affected parties include bus operators, vehicle drivers, and transportation companies operating in Singapore. Non-omnibus drivers face restrictions on bus-only lanes effective 20 April 2026. Statutory boards, emergency services, and bus depot licensees may authorise vehicles to use bus-only lanes under specified conditions.
