Bill C-201 Amends Canada Health Act for Mental Health Services
Bill C-201, introduced by MP Gord Johns on May 29, 2025, proposes to amend the Canada Health Act to expand the definition of "insured health services" to include community-based mental health, addictions, and substance use health services. Currently, provincial and territorial health plans are only required to cover such services when provided by physicians or in hospitals and deemed medically necessary. The bill would create a federal requirement for provinces and territories to include coverage of community-based mental health supports in their health insurance plans, addressing financial barriers that currently force Canadians to pay out-of-pocket or go without needed care.
Ukrainian Heritage Month Act, September Designation, Private Bill
Bill C-203, the Ukrainian Heritage Month Act, was introduced in the House of Commons on June 4, 2025 by Liberal MP Yvan Baker. The private member's bill proposes to designate September of each year as "Ukrainian Heritage Month" across Canada. The bill is currently outside the Order of Precedence, meaning it has not yet won the draw that determines which private member's bills can be debated and has not advanced beyond first reading.
Bill C-210 Amends Constitution Act, 1867 (Oath of Office)
Bill C-210, introduced by Bloc Québécois MP Xavier Barsalou-Duval on June 16, 2025, proposes to amend section 128 of the Constitution Act, 1867 to allow every member of the Senate or House of Commons to choose whether to take the oath of allegiance to the Crown, an oath of office, or both before taking their seat. Currently, MPs and Senators are required to swear an oath to the King. The bill has been read a first time and printed but remains outside the Order of Precedence as a private member's bill, meaning it has not won the draw required for debate and is unlikely to become law.
