Summary

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is requesting public comments on renewing its Production Estimate information collection (OMB Control No. 1028-0065) under the Paperwork Reduction Act. Comments must be received by May 14, 2026. The collection gathers mineral production data from respondents for publication in the annual Mineral Commodity Summaries report, used by government agencies, financial institutions, industry, and research organizations.

What changed

USGS is seeking renewal of its approved information collection for mineral production estimates (Forms 9-4042-A and 9-4124-A). The collection provides data on nonfuel mineral production for annual reports published by commodity. These data support the Mineral Commodity Summaries publication used by government agencies, Congressional offices, educational institutions, research organizations, financial institutions, consulting firms, industry, and the general public.

Respondents to this collection include mineral producers who must submit production estimates. The Paperwork Reduction Act process provides an opportunity for the public and federal agencies to comment on the necessity, timeliness, burden accuracy, and utility of the information collection, as well as potential improvements and ways to minimize respondent burden through information technology.

What to do next

  1. Submit public comments on the information collection by May 14, 2026
  2. Comment on necessity of collection, burden accuracy, and ways to minimize respondent burden

We did not receive any public comments on the proposed ICR that is described below. We are especially interested in public
comments addressing the following issues:

(1) is the collection necessary to the proper functions of the USGS minerals information mission; (2) will this information
be processed and used in a timely manner; (3) is the estimate of burden accurate; (4) how the USGS might enhance the quality,
utility, and clarity of the information to be collected; and (5) how the USGS might minimize the burden of this collection
on the respondents, including through the use of information technology.
