Illinois EPA Announces Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events

These col lec tion events ar e coordinated b y Illinois EP A and local co - sponsor s to pro vide residents the free oppor tunity to saf ely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous pr oducts that are common in households. “ A s residents be gin spring cleaning, many may find they hav e unused or unwanted pr oducts and chemicals that c ould pose a hazard to thems elves and the envir on ment, ” said Acting Director Jenning s. “ One- day household haz ardous was te collections pro vide a safe, free, and convenient opportunity f or re sidents to dispose of hazar dous items in an environmental ly friendly manner. ” Each year, Illinois EP A hosts o ne -day HHW collections, w hich are open to al l I llinois re side nts. Each collect ion opera tes from 8:00 a.m. to 3: 00 p.m. on the day of the event; howev er, p re -registr ation is requir ed for all Spring 2026 collection ev ents, which provide s re sidents with specified time slots f or disposal. Residents ar e encour aged to bring chemical cleaner s, oil-based paints, thinners, antifr eeze, motor oil, g asoline, keros ene, we ed killers, ins ecticides, and pes ticides, and other similar hazardous household pr oducts. Fluore scent and other high-intens ity dischar ge lamps may also be broug ht to the collect ions.
