Watch DOGS Volunteer Program Brings Father Figures to Littlerock Elementary
Littlerock Elementary in the Tumwater School District launched the Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) volunteer program. Principal Tamara York collaborated with teachers and the Parent Teacher Organization to establish the program following a community meeting in February 2025 that drew approximately 50 fathers and male caregivers. Volunteers spend full school days assisting with classroom activities, math instruction, reading support, and recess supervision.

Legislative Cuts Reduce TK Access for 2,000 Students
The Washington Legislature reduced state funding for the Transition to Kindergarten (TK) program by 25%, resulting in nearly 2,000 fewer students having access to the program. OSPI was directed to implement the reduction and has developed a funding methodology prioritizing students with the greatest need. The program, operating in 157 school districts serving more than 7,000 students, will see access restricted for the 2026-27 school year.
Six Washington Schools Earn ESEA Distinguished Schools Award
WA OSPI announced six Washington schools received the ESEA Distinguished Schools Award for 2024–25. Two schools earned National Distinguished Schools status and four received State Distinguished Schools recognition. The award honors schools serving at least 35% low-income students for exceptional performance, closing achievement gaps, and serving special populations.
