What changed

TEA has launched the TEHCY Support Hotline, a new toll-free resource (1-855-858-3429) providing real-time technical assistance to parents and educators navigating school enrollment and support services for students experiencing homelessness. The initiative also includes a web-based intake form and builds on the existing TEHCY Regional Network of 20 Education Service Centers supporting over 1,200 school systems.

School systems subject to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act must ensure homeless students are identified, enrolled, and supported. The hotline provides an additional resource for educators and families to access guidance and coordination support, though it does not create new legal obligations beyond existing federal requirements.

Texas Education Agency Launches New Hotline to Support Students Experiencing Homelessness

Date

Austin, TX – October 8, 2025 – The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has launched Texas Education for Homeless Children and Youth (TEHCY) Support, a comprehensive statewide initiative designed to provide direct assistance to families and educators supporting students experiencing homelessness under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

At the center of this initiative is the TEHCY Support Hotline, a toll-free number offering real-time access to trained experts. Whether a parent needs help enrolling their child in school or an educator is seeking guidance on supporting a student experiencing homelessness, the hotline provides immediate technical assistance, resources and support.

“Families should never have to navigate the challenges of homelessness alone,” said Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath. “Now, educators, parents and caregivers can pick up the phone and immediately connect with someone who understands their situation and can guide them to the right resources.”

In addition to the hotline, TEHCY Support includes a web-based intake form for submitting technical assistance requests and advanced data-tracking tools to improve coordination across the state. These enhancements build on the existing TEHCY Regional Network, a partnership with the state’s 20 Education Service Centers (ESCs) that support more than 1,200 school systems.
