Targeted Teacher Shortage Areas Data Collection
Summary
The Department of Education is seeking public comment on a reinstatement without change of a previously approved information collection request (OMB Control No. 1840-0595) for the Targeted Teacher Shortage Areas Data Collection. State, local, and tribal education agencies report teacher shortage area data to support loan deferment programs under FFELP, TEACH Grant, and Federal Perkins Loan regulations. Comments are due May 29, 2026.
What changed
The Department of Education, under the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, proposes to reinstate without changes the Targeted Teacher Shortage Areas Data Collection (OMB Control No. 1840-0595). This collection supports the targeted teacher deferment provisions in FFELP regulations (34 CFR 682.210), Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship Program (34 CFR 653.50(a)), TEACH Grant Program, and Federal Perkins Loan Program (34 CFR 674.53(c)). The collection applies to state, local, and tribal government education agencies, with an estimated 57 annual responses and 6,612 annual burden hours.
Compliance teams at affected state and local education agencies should prepare to submit comments by May 29, 2026 through regulations.gov under Docket ID ED-2026-SCC-0463. While this is a reinstatement without substantive changes to existing requirements, agencies should verify their current reporting practices align with the regulatory provisions cited and confirm the burden estimates remain accurate for their operations.
What to do next
- Review the proposed ICR reinstatement and verify current compliance with FFELP, TEACH Grant, and Perkins Loan reporting requirements under 34 CFR 682.210, 653.50(a), and 674.53(c)
- Submit comments on the information collection via regulations.gov (Docket ID ED-2026-SCC-0463) by May 29, 2026
