Further Education Initial Teacher Training Regulations 2026
Summary
The UK Secretary of State for Education has made the Further Education (Initial Teacher Training) Regulations 2026 (SI 2026 No. 382), effective 15th April 2026. The regulations require educational institutions providing initial teacher training for further education (ITT(FE)) courses to register with the Secretary of State and establish requirements for course specifications and delivery guidance.
What changed
The Regulations, made under section 17 of the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022, establish a new registration framework for providers of initial teacher training for further education in England. Regulation 3 requires the Secretary of State to specify and maintain a list of ITT(FE) courses. Regulation 4 mandates that relevant academic authorities must apply to register each educational institution providing these courses, submitting information including the institution name, governing body details, and course titles for the next academic year. Non-registered institutions cannot legally provide specified ITT(FE) courses.
Relevant academic authorities (governing bodies of educational institutions) must ensure their institutions are registered by the deadlines set by the Secretary of State for each academic year. The regulations extend to England and Wales but apply only in relation to England. Institutions should prepare registration applications with all required information and ensure compliance with any published guidance on course delivery requirements.
What to do next
- Prepare and submit registration applications to the Secretary of State for all educational institutions providing specified ITT(FE) courses
- Ensure registration applications are submitted in sufficient time before the next academic year begins
- Review and comply with any published guidance on delivery of ITT(FE) courses (Regulation 5)
