DoD RFI: State Priorities for Service Members Families
Summary
The Department of Defense (DoD) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather public input on issues impacting Service members and their families that State governments can address. The DoD will use these submissions to set its annual State policy priorities, focusing on barriers arising from military life. Submissions are due by April 23, 2026.
What changed
The Department of Defense (DoD) is seeking public input via a Request for Information (RFI) to identify issues affecting Service members and their families that can be addressed through State-level policy changes. The DoD's Defense-State Liaison Office will use these submissions to determine its annual State policy priorities, aiming to alleviate challenges related to military transience, such as school transitions, record transfers, and course placements for children of active-duty personnel.
Interested parties should submit detailed information, including a title, problem statement, description of the impacted parties, proposed solutions (specifying if State procedures, regulations, or statutes are needed), and current status, by April 23, 2026. This input will guide the DoD in advocating for policy changes at the State level to improve the quality of life for military families and enhance readiness.
What to do next
- Submit issues impacting Service members and families that can be addressed by State governments by April 23, 2026.
- Include issue title, problem statement, impacted parties, proposed solution, and current status in submissions.

ACTION:
Request for information.
SUMMARY:
This request for information provides an opportunity for the public to submit issues that have an impact on Service members
and their families where State governments are the primary agents for making positive change. Each year, the DoW selects State
policy priorities for States to consider that represent barriers resulting from the transience and uncertainty of military
life. For example, DoW has asked States to consider remedies to improve school transitions for children in active duty
military families to overcome problems with records transfer, class and course placement, qualifying for extra-curricular
activities, and fulfilling graduation requirements. The DoW will consider the public submissions in setting those priorities.
DATES:
Consideration will be given to all submissions received by April 23, 2026.
