Summary

Nacha membership approved a Rule change raising the Same Day ACH per-payment limit from $1 million to $10 million, effective September 17, 2027. This is the third increase in Same Day ACH history, following the initial $25,000 limit, a 2020 increase to $100,000, and a March 2022 increase to $1 million. Nacha anticipates the new cap will expand Same Day ACH use cases for invoice and tax payments, insurance claim payments, payroll funding, merchant settlement, and cash concentration.

“The increase takes effect Sept. 17, 2027, and will be the third increase in the history of Same Day ACH.”

What changed

Nacha Operating Rules are amended to increase the Same Day ACH per-payment transaction limit from $1 million to $10 million, effective September 17, 2027. The change reflects growing demand from ACH Network users seeking higher transaction limits for business payments.

Financial institutions processing ACH transactions should prepare their systems for the increased limit by the September 17, 2027 effective date. Institutions offering Same Day ACH services should update customer communications, internal limits, and risk controls to accommodate the new $10 million ceiling for use cases including invoice payments, insurance claims, payroll funding, and merchant settlement.

SAN DIEGO, April 27, 2026 – The Same Day ACH per payment limit will rise to $10 million under a Rule change approved by the Nacha membership, Nacha announced today at its Smarter Faster Payments 2026 conference.

The increase takes effect Sept. 17, 2027, and will be the third increase in the history of Same Day ACH. The initial $25,000 maximum was raised to $100,000 in 2020, and then to $1 million in March 2022.

Nacha anticipates the new $10 million cap will enhance Same Day ACH use cases for invoice and tax payments, insurance claim payments, payroll funding, merchant settlement, and cash concentration, among other uses.

“Nacha has been hearing from ACH Network users that they wanted a higher limit, and we are pleased to meet that need,” said Jane Larimer, Nacha President and CEO. “With its speed and security, Same Day ACH is helping to meet the demand for faster payments.”

In the first quarter of 2026 there were 403 million Same Day ACH payments valued at $1.1 trillion, up 23.6% and 22.1% respectively from the same period a year ago. These increases followed a banner year in 2025 with 1.4 billion payments worth $3.9 trillion, respective increases from 2024 of 16.7% and 21.4%.

In September, Same Day ACH will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Learn more about Same Day ACH, including use cases and success stories, on Nacha’s website.
