What changed

Syngenta Crop Protection LLC submitted a petition to the FAA requesting extension of Exemption No. 21124, which permits the operation of UAS weighing below 55 pounds for commercial agricultural-related services. The petition covers multiple sections of 14 CFR including operating rules, certification requirements, and operational limitations for agricultural aircraft. The exemption currently allows Syngenta to conduct UAS operations without complying with certain traditional manned aircraft agricultural operation requirements.

Agricultural firms and UAS operators in the crop production sector should monitor the FAA's response to this petition. If the extension is granted, affected parties operating similar UAS for agricultural purposes may benefit from the regulatory relief. The petition demonstrates continued industry interest in expanding UAS applications for precision agriculture, including pesticide application and crop monitoring services.

What to do next

  1. Monitor for FAA determination on exemption extension petition
  2. Review applicable 14 CFR sections listed in the petition
