EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced a bridge reconstruction project at the Interstate 57 Neoga interchange begins Monday, April 20. This $54.6 million project will consist of the southbound bridge being reconstructed in 2026 and the northbound bridge being reconstructed in 2027.
A barrier wall will be constructed on the northbound bridge to separate the driving lane and passing lane. When completed, crossovers will be used to divert southbound traffic to the northbound passing lane. Northbound traffic will use the northbound driving lane. Warning signs and lights, barrels, message boards, and arrow boards will be used to direct traffic through the crossover.
Once the crossovers are in use, the southbound off- and on-ramps will be closed at the Neoga interchange. A detour will be posted utilizing U.S. 45 and the I-57 Effingham interchange.
Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
