GDOT Awards Contract for Next Phase of Highway 20 Widening
CARTERSVILLE, GA – Work will soon be getting underway on the next phase of the widening of Georgia State Route 20. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) awarded C.W. Matthews Contracting CO, Inc. the $35.6 million contract to widen SR 20 from East Cherokee Drive to SR 369. The project is part of the larger SR 20 widening project stretching from I-575 to North Corners Parkway in Forsyth County.
"While we know it's been a long process, I think the motoring public will find traveling the route much smoother once it's all completed," said GDOT District Six Engineer Grant Waldrop.
Motorists can expect to see the first orange cones out early this summer. The 2.4 mile-project is slated to be completed July 31, 2029. Two of the sections of SR 20 are already completed. The other section currently under construction extends from SR 369 to Post Road. Construction on that phase began last year, and it's expected to finished in late 2028. The final section of the SR 20 widening project, from Union Hill Road to East Cherokee Drive, should be let later this summer.
"Awarding this contract means we're one step closer to finishing the entire corridor," Waldrop said. "State Route 20 is an essential artery for Northwest Georgia and these projects will ensure that it can handle the increasing traffic in this growing area."
Advisory: Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org , or download the Georgia 511 app. O ur maintenance team members who repair roads and bridges and our project teams who oversee construction projects are continuing their essential work, while following sanitary work practices prescribed by health agencies to protect themselves and the public from the coronavirus, as are most state DOTs in the U.S. ### |
