What changed

The Department of State has published a notice designating specific objects imported for the 'Picasso—Klee—Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen' exhibition as culturally significant. This determination, made under the Act of October 19, 1965 (22 U.S.C. 2459), allows for the temporary exhibition and display of these objects within the United States, provided they are imported pursuant to an agreement with their foreign owner or custodian.

This notice serves as a formal declaration of cultural significance and national interest for the specified artifacts. While this is a specific designation for a particular exhibition, it establishes a precedent for similar future importations. Compliance officers should note that such designations are made on a case-by-case basis and require adherence to the terms of the agreement with the foreign owner. No specific compliance actions are mandated by this notice for general regulated entities, but it is relevant for institutions involved in international cultural exchanges.
