Summary

The University of Ottawa has issued a tender for modern holding systems for salmonid fishes, including Recirculating Aquaculture Systems and incubators. The tender closes on March 23, 2026, and aims to replace aging equipment to support research programs.

What changed

The University of Ottawa is seeking proposals for new holding systems for salmonid fishes, including Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and incubators. This Request for Proposals (RFP) aims to replace existing 30-year-old systems that are at end-of-life and inefficient for holding small groups of fish. The new systems will support research on salmonid physiology and responses to environmental challenges.

Prospective proponents must submit proposals through MERX by the closing date of March 23, 2026. The contract is estimated to begin on September 1, 2026. Interested parties should consult the MERX website for full details and potential fees. This procurement is subject to trade agreements including the CFTA and CETA.

Description

This Request for Proposals (the “RFP”) is an invitation by the University of Ottawa (the “University”) to prospective proponents to submit proposals for Holding systems for salmonid fishes, as further described in Appendix D (RFP Particulars) Section A (the “Deliverables”).
This goal of this project is to provide modern, flexible holding systems for salmonid fishes of various sizes.  The holding systems currently available in the Aquatics Facillity at the University of Ottawa are about 30 years old and are at end-of-life, requiring high rates of water turnover, as well as constant technical support and maintenance.  Also, all of the current systems are large volume tanks (~1,200 L), which are not ideal for holding small groups of fish.  Therefore, the goal of the current project is to purchase and install Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) with tanks varying in size from 1,200 L to 200 L.  In addition, a vertical incubator for salmonid embryos and larvae (a “Heath tray”) will be purchased and installed to allow salmonid fishes to be reared in the Aquatics Facility.  These holding systems will support research programs focused on the physiology of salmonid fishes and their responses to challenges such as high temperature and/or environmental toxicants.
