The patent describes a computing system designed to improve the accuracy and reliability of quantum computing devices through advanced error metric calculations.

What changed

This document is a publication from the European Patent Office (EPO) Bulletin concerning a patent application by Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC, titled "Measurement-Based Qubit Benchmarking." The patent (EP4711988A2), published on March 18, 2026, outlines a quantum computing system that includes a controller configured to determine error metric values for logical qubits. This is achieved by performing Pauli measurement sequences and computing error metric values based on assignment error probabilities and mutual unbiasedness values of adjacent Pauli measurements.

This publication is primarily informational, detailing a technological advancement in quantum computing. As a patent bulletin, it does not impose direct compliance obligations on regulated entities. However, companies involved in quantum computing research, development, or manufacturing, particularly those operating within the EU, may wish to review this patent for insights into emerging technologies and potential intellectual property considerations. No specific compliance deadlines or penalties are associated with this patent publication.

Abstract

A computing system comprises a quantum computing device including a plurality of logical qubits that each include a respective plurality of physical qubits; and a controller. The controller is configured to determine an error metric value of a qubit error metric for a logical qubit of the plurality of logical qubits at least in part by: at the logical qubit, performing a Pauli measurement sequence including a plurality of Pauli measurements; and computing the error metric value based at least in part on respective results of the plurality of Pauli measurements. Computing the error metric value includes computing respective assignment error probabilities of the Pauli measurements; and/or computing respective mutual unbiasedness values of pairs of non-commuting Pauli measurements that are adjacent in the Pauli measurement sequence. The controller is further configured to output the error metric value.
