Summary

USPTO granted patent US12598072B2 to Capital One Services, LLC on April 7, 2026, covering methods for facilitating token use authentication using stochastic images generated by machine learning models. The patent describes a system that detects authentication requests, retrieves previously displayed images, generates new images using stochastic ML models, and authenticates users based on image selection recognition. The patent contains 19 claims and was filed on November 10, 2023.

What changed

USPTO issued Patent No. US12598072B2 to Capital One Services, LLC for methods and systems related to token authentication using stochastic images. The invention enables authentication by generating and displaying sets of images including a previously authenticated image and a newly generated stochastic image, with authentication granted upon correct user selection of the previously displayed image. The patent covers technology that combines H04L 9/3213 and G06T 11/00 classifications.

Patent grants establish intellectual property protection for the assignee without imposing compliance obligations on third parties. Competitors developing similar authentication technologies should consider potential infringement implications and may need to design around the granted claims or seek licensing arrangements with Capital One. The patent's scope covering ML-based stochastic image generation for authentication may influence product development strategies in the authentication and cybersecurity sectors.

Abstract

Methods and systems are described herein for facilitating token use authentication for access tokens using stochastic images. The system may detect an authentication request to authenticate use of an access token. The access token may be associated with a first image previously displayed to an authenticated user of the access token. The system may retrieve the first image previously displayed to the authenticated user and input parameters previously used to generate the first image. The system may obtain, from a stochastic machine learning model based on the input parameters, a second image different from the first image. The system may generate, for display, an image set including the first image and the second image and may receive a selection of the first image from the image set. The system may then grant the authentication request based on the selection of the first image.
