Massachusetts DOR Warns of New Mail Postmarking Timelines
Summary
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) has alerted taxpayers to changes in United States Postal Service procedures that may affect mail postmark dates. Taxpayers are advised to file electronically or mail documents early to ensure timely receipt and avoid missing deadlines for the Tax Year 2025.
What changed
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) has issued a warning to taxpayers, preparers, and child support customers regarding recent changes to United States Postal Service (USPS) procedures. Effective December 2025, mail received at post offices may not be postmarked on the day of receipt unless specifically requested at a retail counter. This change could potentially delay the postmark dates of mailed tax returns and other documents.
To mitigate potential delays and ensure compliance with tax deadlines, the DOR strongly encourages taxpayers to file and pay taxes electronically via MassTaxConnect, which is available 24/7. For those who must mail their returns, the DOR advises mailing documents early. The deadline for Tax Year 2025 Massachusetts personal income tax returns is April 15, 2026, with extension payments also due by this date to qualify for the extended filing deadline of October 15, 2026. Taxpayers must pay at least 80% of their tax due by April 15, 2026, to qualify for an extension.
What to do next
- Advise clients to file tax returns and payments electronically via MassTaxConnect.
- Encourage clients who must mail documents to do so well in advance of deadlines.
- Ensure internal processes account for potential mail delays when handling physical documents.
